Language Development

The beginnings of language learning can be seen in a baby’s movement of her body in synchrony with her mother’s speech patterns, intonations, and pauses. At first the baby displays constant reflex movements, followed by the development of vocalization, then inflections, emotional content, and babbly. Finally words come, and ultimately these words have meaning of their own, no longer needing the reflex motor movements. The sounds parent makes, including “parentese,” or baby talk, and rhythmic songs and rhymes, appeal directly to the right hemisphere of the baby’s brain, which is more highly developed than the left hemisphere at this stage. 6 months old baby can categorize vowel sounds that are meaningful in their native language. When you say I LOVE YOU with high-pitched tone, may able to calm down baby.

When you massage your baby, it’s the best time to “talk” to them and “teach” them the name of the body part that you are massaging. This can enhance their body awareness process.
